Our Story
The United Church, Chapel on the Hill, is a progressive, non-denominational/inter-faith Christian church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Chapel on the Hill was the first church in the “Secret City,” serving people of many different backgrounds brought together as part of the Manhattan Project, of World War II, bringing a great diversity of people and ideas to what would become Oak Ridge. In this born over-night, military town, religious pursuits became a melting pot of ideas which occurred inside and outside of our chapel walls, the only chapel in Oak Ridge at that time.
The church legacy of bringing people together continues today. Visitors are always welcome. We invite you to join us to learn how enriching and challenging the experience of worshiping, studying, and serving with people of various denominations can be. We extend a special invitation to all who are having trouble finding a church that is a good match for their own particular religious beliefs. Many mixed-faith couples have found a common “church home” here.
